State Adds 2,500 Jobs, Unemployment Falls

Massachusetts gained 2,500 jobs in April, while unemployment fell 0.2 percentage points to 6.3 percent, according to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The job gain was driven by the professional, scientific and business services industry, which added 4,200 jobs over the month. Other industries adding jobs were information, leisure and hospitality, financial activities and trade, transportation and utilities. Construction lost 1,300 jobs, and manufacturing, government and education and health services were also down.

Unemployment has fallen fairly consistently since peaking at 8.7 percent in October 2009 and now stands well below the U.S. average of 8.1 percent.
