St. V's Unveils Cancer-Fighting Technology

Saint Vincent Hospital yesterday unveiled new multimillion-dollar technology which will act as a surgical alternative for the treatment of certain cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

The Worcester-based hospital acquired the CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System last month and installed it at its Vernon Hill campus, which houses its radiation oncology department. The system is the first in Massachusetts outside of Boston, officials said, and can be used to treat tumors in several parts of the body, including the brain, lungs, spine, liver, pancreas and kidneys.

CyberKnife is described as a non-invasive radiation treatment that targets a single tumor or lesion inside the body with high-energy radiation. The precision of the radiation spares nearby normal tissue in a patient's body.

"The CyberKnife will provide our surgeons with the choice that achieves the best possible outcome with the least risk for our patients," said Dr. Mark Brenner, Saint Vincent's chief of radiation oncology. "This is a very, very powerful tool."

Although the system was installed last month, Saint Vincent held an open house Monday night for it at the Vernon Hill campus. Brenner said the system cost about $4 million.
