Southborough Fuel Cell Co. Powers Record Flight

An ultralight, high-endurance fuel cell built by Southborough-based Protonex Technology Corp. powered a record, nine-hour, unmanned small aircraft flight.

The flight was documented by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory and Protonex development partner AeroVironment Inc. The previous record for an unmanned small aircraft flight was seven continuous hours. AeroVironment builds the "Puma" aircraft that made the flight.

The Protonex fuel cell system is capable of producing large amounts of power in a lightweight package. The company said the system would be produced for the military and for commercial use.
