Solect Energy launches energy-storage division

Solect Energy, a Hopkinton developer of solar-energy systems, is launching an energy storage division, it announced Tuesday.
The new division will sell storage products produced by the Westborough company NEC Energy Solutions, which Solect said is one of the world's leading energy-storage companies with more than 250 megawatts of projects installed or under construction.
The two companies said they expect Massachusetts to be a major market for energy storage because it has some of the highest demand charges in the country, which drive consumers' bills higher at peak usage times. Those demand charges can account for up to 70 percent of a commercial customer's electricity bill, said Solect, which estimated up to 70,000 commercial customers in the state pay enough in such charges that installing an energy storage system would be economically feasible.
Solect, which has more than 400 installed projects, will act as a reseller and independent contractor for NEC Energy Solutions storage units, and will install, operate and maintain the systems. The companies will remain separate entities.
NEC Energy Solutions has its headquarters in Westborough but has offices in Missouri, Britain, Brazil, China, Italy and Singapore.
