Shrewsbury, Westminster Get Biotech Nod

Shrewsbury and Westminster are among four Massachusetts communities recently deemed “BioReady” by the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council.

The industry group began the BioReady Communities Campaign in 2008 to recognize cities and towns that meet certain criteria for zoning bylaws, building codes and other factors important to biotechnology companies.

The two other communities recently recognized as BioReady are Woburn, which received the top”platinum” rating, suggesting it has an ideal climate for biotech, and Arlington, which got a third-tier bronze rating. Both Westminster and Shrewsbury received mid-level gold ratings.

There are now a total of 69 BioReady rated communities in the state. In the Central Massachusetts region, Worcester, Framingham, Westborough, Grafton and Devens all have platinum ratings, while about a dozen others are rated at the gold or bronze level.
