The U.S. Labor Department's OSHA has proposed fines of $238,000 against the U.S. Postal Service mail processing facility in Shrewsbury because of electrical hazards.
OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, accused the Postal Service of willfully violating safety standards by letting untrained employees work on electrical equipment. It said the practice went on for years even though the employer was aware of the dangers.
OSHA said the problems were discovered during an inspection in June after a worker complaint. It said unqualified employees were allowed to work on electric circuits and equipment, equipment was not de-energized before the maintenance was performed and employees were not given insulated tools.
In a statement, USPS spokesman Dennis Tarmey said the Postal Service began implementing a plan to improve its electrical work practices in January 2010 and is in the process of providing training and equipment to its employees.
He said the Postal Service will examine its options regarding the proposed fines.
The processing and distribution plant is located at 192 Main St. in Shrewsbury and employees about 540 people.
