At the request of Gov. Deval Patrick's administration, MassDevelopment President Robert L. Culver is stepping down from the position after seven years on the job.
MassDevelopment spokeswoman Janet Hookailo said Housing and Economic Development Secretary Greg Bialecki met with Culver last week and "indicated he would like to make a change, that he would like to bring in new leadership."
"It was a very amicable, straightforward conversation," she said.
MassDevelopment said Culver will keep his job while a successor is found.
Since Culver became president and CEO in 2004, the quasi-public organization has attracted companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb and Evergreen Solar to its flagship 4,400-acre Devens project.
As Patrick approaches the start of his second term, several other state officials have announced they will not stay on for another four years, including Ian Bowles, secretary of energy and environmental affairs.
