Second phase of 216-apartment Sterling complex begins construction

Following the completion of the first phase, the construction of the second section of the Northgate Meadows Apartments complex in Sterling has begun, with the third and final phase starting construction immediately following the completion of phase two.

Located off of Research Drive in Sterling near the Leominster border, Northgate Meadows Apartments is a 216-unit mixed-income apartment complex being built by Leominster developer Whitney Companies and designed by Harvard-based firm Maugel DeStefano Architects.

Each phase is 106,000 square feet and contains 72 units, a mixture of one- and two-bedroom apartments, with 25% of the units set aside as affordable, reserved for tenants making 80% or less of area median income, according to a 2021 permit decision by the Town of Sterling.

In addition to Whitney Companies and Maugel DeStefano Architects, project team members included engineers Hannigan Engineering, Inc. of Leominster and New-Hampshire-based TFMoran, Inc.

Maugel DeStefano in March announced the completion of The Kiln, a 111-unit apartment complex in Worcester, built by Worcester developer GoVenture Capital Group.

Among its other projects, Whitney Companies converted a former Commonwealth Plastics Corp. facility in Leominster into 51 apartments, called The Lofts at City Place. The company also develops commercial properties such as City Place, Southgate Business Park, and Whitney Square, all in Leominster, according to the company’s website.
