Sanofi to stay in Framingham despite Cambridge consolidation

Drugmaker Sanofi will keep its presence in Framingham while it consolidates its Massachusetts operations at a new 900,000 square-foot lease in Cambridge.

The Cambridge offices are expected to open in 2021 with enough space for 2,700 employees. The company announced its lease at the Cambridge Crossing development this week.

Sanofi said the new offices will bring together workers now at different sites in Massachusetts to allow greater collaboration and access to Cambridge's bio-pharmaceutical community.

Sanofi has offices in Westborough affected by the move. The company would say only it is committed to maintaining a presence in Cambridge and surrounding communities.

For research and development and industrial affairs, the company will maintain a significant presence in Framingham, Sanofi spokesman Nicolas Kressmann said. Sanofi's presence in the city extends back to when it bought Genzyme in 2011 for $20 billion.

Sanofi had about 1,800 employees in Framingham as of May, when the company laid off 95 workers there despite longer term plans for a nearly 15,000-square-foot, two-story expansion of its 101,000-square-foot plant on New York Avenue.

As of 2016, Sanofi had 168,000 square feet of space in Westborough at One Research Drive.
