Rising Stress

Facing depleted workforces and added responsibilities, many managers say they're more stressed than they were a year ago. A recent survey by staffing firm OfficeTeam finds that, while the majority of managers say their stress level is the same as last year, 30 percent say it's risen. Just 11 percent say the pressure is down.

The survey of 1,000 senior managers at companies with 20 or more employees also found that 28 percent of managers expect their stress to rise further in the next year.

Asked how their stress level at work is now compared to a year ago, 9 percent of managers said "much higher," 21 percent said "somewhat higher" and 59 percent said "about the same." Eight percent said "somewhat lower," and just 3 percent said "much lower."

Responding to a question about the coming year, 64 percent said they expect their stress levels to stay about the same, while 28 percent expect more stress and 8 percent expect less.

OfficeTeam said some of the major reasons for the stress are expanded duties, more advanced responsibilities, fear of losing a job, rancorous office politics and micromanaging superiors.
