Worcester County had the second-highest rent increase among 12 Massachusetts counties during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report from the Washington Post.
Since 2019, the average rent in Worcester has risen 12.1% from $1,454 to $1,654 per month. The jump ranked Worcester second after Plymouth County for highest rent increases. Plymouth County had a 12.6% increase since 2019, a half percentage point more than Worcester, for a current average rent of $2,012.
Despite its dramatic increase, Worcester County’s rents are still average within the state; Worcester has the seventh highest rent of the 12 counties the Washington Post studied.
Norfolk and Middlesex counties, which include a few Central Massachusetts towns around I-495 North and South, had average rent increases at 9.8% and 8.6% respectively. Their average rents both hover around $2,400, putting them second and third for highest rents in the state after Suffolk County, which includes Boston.
Cape Cod’s Barnstable County, which has the fourth lowest rent at $1,568, was the only county in the state to see a rent decrease since 2019, dropping 1.3%.
The report did not include Dukes County or Nantucket.
