Report: Devens jobs, businesses on rise
A report by the UMass Donahue Institute shows that employment, wages, and the number of businesses in Devens all increased between 2013 and 2014, generating economic benefits for the broader Bay State economy.
Devens, a 4,400-acre North Central Massachusetts community that was formerly a U.S. Army base, employs 4,030 workers this year, according to third annual Donahue report that measures Devens’ economic impact. That’s up from 3,634 in 2013, and 3,208 in 2012. Seventy-four percent of those jobs are in the private sector, with the rest nonprofit and government jobs.
Meanwhile, total wages have increased to $300 million, up from $251 million in 2013, and $220 million in 2010. The average salary of a person who works in Devens is $74,473, more than 22 percent above the state average of $60,892.
And the number of employers, including private, nonprofit, and governmental, is up this year at 91, after dipping slightly to 87 in 2013. In 2012, there were 95 employers in Devens.
According to Donahue, those employers generate combined sales of $918 million, as well as additional spending of $665 million in local supply chains, making Devens’ total contribution to the Massachusetts economy $1.5 million.
