State officials have designated science and mathematics education initiatives by Quinsigamond Community College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute as models for the state and nation.
The two programs were highlighted by a subcommittee of the Massachusetts STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Advisory Board. Altogether, six programs across the state received the designation.
The two Worcester-area programs are QCC's Advanced Robotics Program and WPI's Project Lead the Way. The QCC program works with students in Worcester County schools, promoting education through robotics competition. The WPI project is a STEM curriculum for grades six through 12 that is used at 4,200 schools across the country.
The endorsements were announced at the National Governors Association's Center for Best Practices conference in Boston. The designation marks the programs as valuable initiatives that could be replicated elsewhere in the state or nation.
The STEM Advisory Council is working with the Massachusetts Business Roundtable to find additional revenue for the endorsed projects.
