QCC, UMass Medical, public schools get life-sciences funding

Quinsigamond Community College and the University of Massachusetts Medical School have each received $5 million grants from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC).

The awards announced Monday were among close to $11 million the MLSC awarded to Central Massachusetts educational institutions.

More than $925,000 was awarded to fund equipment and supplies for high schools and middle schools in Worcester and surrounding communities. That includes $265,000 that will be used to buy laboratory equipment for the city's six middle schools. The money will also be used to make the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum uniform across the middle schools, the statement from MLSC said.

The $5 million awarded to UMass Medical School is for a joint venture with Harvard Medical School to establish a facility for high resolution cryo-electron microscopy. The relatively new technology studies the relationships between structure and function in large molecular complexes within cells.

Quinsigamond Community College (QCC) will use its $5 million to enhance the existing life science programming and expand the college’s life sciences and biotech programming into Southbridge and downtown Worcester, the statement said.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) is an investment agency that supports life sciences innovation, research, development and commercialization.

Others receiving life-sciences grant money include Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School ($26,500); Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School ($90,000); Fitchburg High School ( $99,000); Massachusetts Academy of Arts and Sciences and Cambridge Rindge and Latin School ($100,000); and North Brookfield High School, $97,000.
