Seventy-eight percent of Bostonians polled in a recent survey said they would support a surtax on incomes above $1 million to increase investments in public transportation and education.
A poll of 502 Boston-area registered voters earlier this month, released Monday by WBUR, found 72 percent of respondents in the Greater Boston region -- including Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville -- supported the tax, compared to 24 percent who were opposed and 5 percent who were unsure or declined to answer.
Lawmakers plan during a May 18 Constitutional Convention to debate the so-called millionaire's tax, a citizen's initiative (H 3933) that would apply a four percentage point surtax on incomes above $1 million per year. Senate President Stanley Rosenberg has repeatedly expressed support for the proposal and House Speaker Robert DeLeo said last month he plans to vote in favor of it.
The surtax proposal had backing of a majority across all income breakdowns considered in the poll, ranging from 91 percent of respondents earning under $25,000 to 67 percent of those earning above $150,000.
The poll, conducted for WBUR by MassINC Polling Group, focused on traffic in the Boston area.
