Pipeline opponents camp, rally at State House

Tents pitched by pipeline opponents, who camped overnight after walking 43 miles to Boston, sprawled across the State House steps ahead of a planned rally Monday.

More than four days ago, demonstrators set out from Medway to Boston to call on lawmakers to reject a tariff enabling utilities to pass along pipeline construction costs to ratepayers.

Organizers say demonstrators arrived Sunday evening, and around two dozen camped out last night.

Craig Altemose of the Better Future Project told ralliers that the state is at a decisive moment in its energy plans, with lawmakers facing a “fork in the road” between “Spectra street” and “the path of the people.”

Six lawmakers are working to iron out a compromise between House and Senate renewable energy bills.

Sen. Marc Pacheco, one of the conference committee members, said at the rally that the state should “walk into the rest of the 21st century” embracing clean energy.
