Framingham energy efficiency company Ameresco Inc. has won a contract with the City of Phoenix to install LED lamps in the city’s traffic lights.
The two-phase project will involve a total of 860 intersections, with the first 335 expected to be completed in early 2011.
The LED lights last longer than the city’s existing traffic signal lights and use up to 90 percent less energy, according to Ameresco. That will amount to a 5 million kilowatt-hour annual reduction.
The company also said the drop in electrical and maintenance costs will allow the retrofit to pay for itself over time.
