Personal Incomes Take A Hit In Mass.

The Worcester area's per capita personal income declined 1.3 percent to $42,296 last year compared to $42,850 the prior year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

In the Boston metro area, per capita personal income fell 2.7 percent to $53,713 from $55,187 a year earlier.

Nationwide, personal income declined in most metropolitan areas in 2009, falling 1.8 percent on average after rising 2.7 percent in 2008.

Most cases of personal income growth were due to increases in unemployment insurance benefits. The net earnings of employees increased in just 57 metropolitan areas and were concentrated in the government sector, particularly in the military.
