Simon Property Group, the owner of the Auburn Mall and Solomon Pond Mall in Marlborough, has acquired a major competitor.
Simon announced Monday it has bought Taubman Realty Group, a Detroit-area group whose only New England mall is Westfarms in West Hartford, Conn.
In addition to the Auburn and Solomon Pond malls, Indianapolis-based Simon owns 10 other shopping centers in Massachusetts. It has 176 total locations including outlet malls.

Taubman owns, manages or leases 26 shopping centers scattered across the country.
One of the Auburn Mall's anchor tenants, the former Macy's home goods store, has been transformed into a Reliant Medical Group office. But the mall is facing the closure of its Sears store. It and the Solomon Pond Mall have lost their Olympia Sports locations and their Payless ShoeSource stores, and may lose their Forever 21 stores, as the chain has planned closures nationwide.
