Orders for durable goods rebound

New orders for durable goods in the United States rebounded in June after two consecutive months of decreases, helped by a big jump in orders for transportation equipment, especially civilian aircraft, the federal government said Monday.

New orders last month jumped $7.7 billion from May, to $235.3 billion, a rise of 3.4 percent, beating a 3-percent forecast from analysts polled by Yahoo Finance. New orders for transportation equipment, which includes motor vehicles and parts, as well as military and civilian aircraft, rose 8.9 percent, the U.S. Census Bureau said.

Orders for civilian aircraft and parts jumped 66 percent from May, from $10.4 billion to $17.2 billion, the government said.

The monthly report also said shipments of durable goods and unfilled orders increased in June after two consecutive monthly declines. Meanwhile, inventories, up in all but one of the last 25 months, edged up 0.4 percent to $402.3 billion, following a drop of 0.2 percent in May.
