Northampton construction contractor D.A. Sullivan & Sons, with experience in library projects, has been awarded the $8.5-million contract for renovations at the Worcester Public Library in downtown Worcester.

The planned renovation will include a new entrance off of Franklin Street facing Worcester Common, enclosure of the portico along Salem Street and a new children’s room on the third floor. The project will increase the library’s footprint by 8,000 square feet. The last renovation of the 147,000-square-foot library was in 2001. It was built in 1960.

The contract with DAS covers the majority of the estimated $12.7-million project. The Worcester Public Library Foundation has already secured $3.45 million towards the project with additional fundraising underway.

DAS is a general contracting, construction management and owner’s project management firm based in Northampton.

The company has undertaken a number of library projects in the past, including the Leicester Public Library, Athol Public Library, South Hadley Public Library, Holyoke Public Library, Westhampton Public Library, and the UMass Amherst Morrill IV Neuroscience Lab.

The renovation is scheduled to begin this fall and last for approximately 52 weeks.
