Customers of National Grid are being urged to beware of scams that demand they pay past-due balances over the phone or through a pre-paid card.
According to the utility, customers are being contacted by phone and told their power will be immediately shut off if they don't pay past-due balances. Some customers are being told they have faulty meters that are dangerous and must to pay for replacements.
National Grid owns its electric meters and customers are not responsible for their replacement costs.
And although it will contact customers whose past-due balances to offer payment options, direct phone payments are not required. National Grid said customers can arrange to pay by check, credit card or debit card if they speak to a customer service representative. Payments can also be made by credit card or debit card without a representative.
To verify information and for any billing-related questions, customers are asked to call 800-322-3223.
