The New England unemployment rate was unchanged at 4.6 percent in September from August, although the figure is down more than a full percent from the region’s rate a year earlier, according to the New England Information Office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
New England’s jobless rate was 5.7 percent in September 2014.
The 4.6-percent figure for New England compares favorably with the national rate of 5.1 percent, the BLS said.
Three New England states posted jobless below the regional average: New Hampshire (3.4 percent), Vermont (3.7 percent) and Maine (4.4 percent) recorded lower-than-average unemployment rates.
Massachusetts’ unemployment rate in September was 4.6 percent. It was 5.6 percent a year earlier.
Over the last year, the BLS said, all six New England states recorded significant unemployment rate decreases, with declines ranging from 1.8 percentage points in Rhode Island to 0.5 point in Vermont. Rhode Island’s drop to 5.4 percent in September was the largest year-over-year decline nationwide.
