Advanced materials manufacturer Multiscale Systems, of Worcester, has won a $15,000 innovator award as part of the American-Made Challenge competition, which is run by the Department of Energy, the company announced Wednesday.
The award, given in the Innovations in Advanced Manufacturing for Hydropower category, was issued in December.
The award-winning concept revolved around dampening pads, called MetaTHERM-V, which aim to reduce vibration in turbine assemblies.
The pads, according to Multiscale Systems, could reduce plant downtime due to maintenance and potentially improve cost and time associated with manufacturing replacement parts. Even further, according to the company, the technology could reduce catastrophic hydroelectric plant problems.
Multiscale Systems won a separate American-Made Challenge award in October, in the Geothermal Manufacturing category, for an application centered around the company’s mechanical metamaterials as a technology for improving enhanced geothermal systems equipment survivability in the extreme downhole environment, according to a press release.
