With plans not yet finalized for a proposed 10,000-square-foot canning facility, Medusa Brewing Co. in Hudson is opening a temporary beer garden on land purchased for that project.
Rather than let that land in the heart of downtown Hudson waste away, the brewery is going to activate it and provide seating for about 80 guests to enjoy a beer on hot summer days.
“We've got a small window of time so we decided instead of sitting on that empty space, let’s activate downtown while we can,” said Owner and General Manager Keith Sullivan.
The brewery purchased the property at 1 Houghton St. for $275,000 in August 2018, but financing has not yet been finalized for the $8-million canning facility project. The company was approved in June for a 10-year tax break for the project that will save the brewers $297,000.
Pending final approval from Hudson police, the brewery will outfit a shipping container with a bar on the property and provide picnic table seating for 80.
In addition to music and lawn games, Sullivan hopes to partner with nearby sandwich shop TC Landos for bring-your-own-food services.
“We figured while we’ve got the land and we’re sitting on it; and while there’s a safe window of time, let’s do it,” Sullivan said.
The beer garden will be open until Sept. 13 on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
