With MBTA subway service largely restored over the weekend, General Manager Beverly Scott on Monday said her staff will be reviewing options to potentially reimburse public transit riders for fares paid during the recent spate of substandard performance.
Scott said a final recommendation will be brought to the MBTA board of directors at their next meeting on March 11.
"This past month has been an extraordinarily challenging time for the MBTA, but even more so for our customers," Scott said in a statement. "We tremendously respect and appreciate the hundreds of thousands of our customers who use MBTA services every day for work, school, medical visits, shopping and recreation. And, fully recognize the hardships and inconvenience caused by the significant disruptions in service over the last four weeks."
The MBTA staff will review options for providing fare reimbursement with the MassDOT Finance Committee on March 3, and present the full board with a final recommendation a week later.
Gov. Charlie Baker has voiced support for exploring the idea of fare reimbursements given the extended period of time over which MBTA services were either cancelled or subject to significant delays.
Riders on the MBTA's commuter rail system continues to face delays and cancellations that operator Keolis expects to last all week, at a minimum.
