Redevelopment of environmentally hazardous sites has produced more than $300 million in new tax revenue in 50 cities across the country and created more than 161,000 new jobs, according to the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Three cities in Massachusetts, and 99 nationwide, participated in a brownfields redevelopment report compiled by the association. The participating Massachusetts cities were Boston, Somerville and Gloucester. Brownfields are vacant or underutilized sites that have a real or perceived environmental contamination issues.
In the study, 84 percent of respondents said they have been successful in redeveloping at least one brownfield site in the past two decades, with 54 cities redeveloping a total of 2,118 sites. Those cities estimate the development has created 64,000 pre-development and remediation jobs and 97,000 permanent jobs.
