Mass. Workforce Aging

By 2020, almost 27 percent of Massachusetts workers will be age 55 or older, according to a new report by state research organization Commonwealth Corp.

Commonwealth, a quasi-public agency within the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, found that some industries already have a high percentage of older workers. In education and health services, almost a quarter of employees are 55 or older. In repair, maintenance and personal services, the figure is 28.2 percent.

Commonwealth Corp. says it is working to help businesses develop strategies to retain and support older workers through program grants.
