Mass. Spends More Than Most On Students

The Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center says the state spends more per pupil on education than many states, but less as a percentage of income than most.

MassBudget has released a report called "Public School Funding in Massachusetts: Where We Are, What Has Changed, and How We Compare to Other States." The report is based on 2008 U.S. Census Bureau data on education spending.

Massachusetts ranked 11th in spending per pupil, but 40th in education spending as a percentage of income, MassBudget found.

MassBudget also found that the state is more reliant on local funding for education than most other states, even as stimulus funding has increased the amount of federal money used to support education in the state.
