Average SAT scores among Massachusetts public high school students in 2014 were flat in reading and math and down slightly in writing, but above the national average in all three areas.
According to College Board test results announced by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the average SAT score for Massachusetts public high schools was 507 in critical reading, up from 506 in 2013, and 523 in math, up from 522 in 2013.The average SAT score for Massachusetts students in writing was 498, down from 500 in 2013.
The national average SAT score this year was 492 in critical reading (same as last year), 501 in math (down from 503 last year) and 478 in writing (down from 480 last year).
State officials also reported that SAT participation among Hispanic and African-American students increased this year, and that 80 percent of Massachusetts public high school students in the class of 2014 took the SAT in high school. Additionally, the state reported that participation by Massachusetts students in grades 9 through 12 in Advanced Placement exams rose by 7.5 percent in 2014.
In a statement, Education Secretary Matt Malone said, "The fact that we not only continue to beat the national average, but that we are seeing more of our students challenging themselves by taking AP coursework and exams is a credit to the hard work of our students and educators statewide."
