EcoTarium signs deal with National Geographic

Worcester’s EcoTarium has become the first New England museum to partner with National Geographic in an agreement that will bring the educational organization’s films and exhibits to the city.

The five-year partnership allows the EcoTarium to show National Geographic’s films and traveling exhibits. The science and nature museum will also now be eligible for grants from the nonprofit organization, it said in a statement. There are fewer than 10 such museum partnerships in the United States, according to the EcoTarium.

“Partnering with National Geographic, one of the most well respected providers of scientific content in the world, allows us to work towards our strategic goal of becoming a national leader in engaging communities with science and nature,” EcoTarium President Joseph Cox said in the statement.

Cox anticipated that the additional programming would help draw more visitors, increasing membership and revenue. National Geographic will also provide marketing support, paving the way for access to the EcoTarium for its members in the region, Cox said.

The partnership includes adding to the EcoTarium theater’s name, making it the “Alden Digital Planetarium: A National Geographic Theater.”
