Mass. masses enroll in state health care program

State officials said this week that the number of people enrolled in Commonwealth Care, a state-subsidized health care program for low-income individuals and families, grew 15 percent last month.

The number of residents enrolled in the program grew by 10,000 in May, to a total of 79,000.
State officials said awareness of state health care reform laws is driving the increase in interest and enrollment.

“Growing enrollment in Commonwealth Care is a sign of success for healthcare reform,” said Leslie Kirwan, secretary of administration and finance and chair of the Health Connector Board. “The message that there are new opportunities to get high-quality, affordable health insurance is clearly getting out.”

The number of page views per day on the Health Connector’s web site also grew in May, going from 7,464 in April to more than 17,000 currently.
