Mass. Home Sales Up Again, But Prices Down

Home sales in Massachusetts rose again for the seventh straight month in January, but median prices fell for single-family homes and remained flat for condominiums, according to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.

The MAR said sales of single-family homes rose 3.7 percent in January over January 2011. Home sales were down nearly 30 percent compared to December, but the association said significant month-to-month drops from December to January are typical. Sales of condominiums were down 0.6 percent.

Meanwhile, the median selling price of a single-family home fell 5 percent to $265,000, marking the fourth straight year-over-year decrease. But the median for condominiums was up a slight 0.3 percent, to just under $248,000.

The MAR blamed foreclosures for keeping "an otherwise improving market" down, said Trisha McCarthy, the group's president.
