Mass. gas prices spike 8 cents following Russian invasion

The average gasoline sale price in Massachusetts is sitting at $3.62 per gallon of regular unleaded, up 8 cents from last week, according to a Monday report from travel organization AAA Northeast.

The increase in fuel price comes after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, briefly causing oil prices to rise to more than $100 per barrel.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the responding escalating series of financial sanctions by the U.S. and its allies have given the global oil market the jitters,” said Mary Maguire, director of public and legislative affairs at AAA Northeast, in a press release. “Like the U.S. stock market, the oil market responds poorly to volatility. It’s an explosive situation, and a grim reminder that events on the far side of the globe can have a ripple effect for American consumers.”

Nationally, fuel prices are up 26 cents from this time in January, and 90 cents higher from February 2021, according to AAA.
