Foreclosure activity across Massachusetts declined in September, with petitions falling to their lowest level in 16 months and deeds plunging 32 percent over September 2011, according to The Warren Group, the Boston-based real estate data source.
Foreclosure petitions, which launch foreclosure proceedings, fell below 1,000 for the first time this year and marked a 16.4-percent decrease since September 2011. But they fell an even deeper 47 percent from August.
However, year-to-date foreclosure petitions are up over last year by nearly 43 percent, at more than 13,000.
The results provided "another strong indicator of a housing market recovery," said Timothy M. Warren Jr., CEO of The Warren Group.
Meanwhile, 510 foreclosure deeds were recorded in September, falling from 754 in the same month last year. For the first nine months of 2012, foreclosure deeds are up 3.5 percent, to 6,486.
Locally, foreclosure numbers were down in both Middlesex and Worcester counties.
