Following a loss of 3,500 jobs in August, Massachusetts gained 5,100 in September, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
From September 2011 to last month, jobs are up 44,600, and by 37,800 so far this year. Over the month, the biggest gains were in leisure and hospitality (6,200, 2 percent) and construction (2,200, 2.2 percent).
The biggest losses were in trade, transportation and utilities (3,400, 0.6 percent), information (2,000, 2.3 percent) and education and health services (1,500, 0.2 percent).
Meanwhile, unemployment inched up to 6.5 percent, compared to 6.3 percent in August. That's down 0.7 percentage point from September 2011 and gives the state a three-month seasonally adjusted average unemployment rate of 6.3 percent and six-month average of 6.2 percent.
