Marlborough contract manufacturer Web Industries will unveil its new 25,000-square-foot Holliston facility on Thursday, making it easier for home pregnancy tests and others like it to come to market.
The Lateral Flow Diagnostics Center of Excellence will employ 20-40 new workers, according to Laurie Partridge, a company spokesperson. The opening of this lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) production facility is meant to be a one-stop outsource manufacturing solution for companies marketing LFI tests, offering them a path from small-scale test development to high-volume commercialization of new devices. LFI tests -- for example, a home pregnancy test -- can usually provide results in less than 15 minutes without processing at a centralized lab.
The tests, traditionally used for medical testing, are in high demand as the technology is used in other industries like food and beverage; veterinary services; water quality; other life science; and environmental safety, according to the company.
The opening of the center makes Web Industries the only U.S.-based non-competing medical contract manufacturer to offer automated reel-to-reel LFI strip manufacturing, device assembly and packaging services at commercial volumes, according to the company.
The facility is located in Web Industries’ existing Web Boston location, which specializes in medical grade material converting, device assembly, and the production of diagnostic tests.
