Dear Editor,
On Feb. 15, a letter from Gareth Charter, publisher of the Holden Landmark Corp., was published by the Worcester Business Journal. In the letter, Charter discussed his incorrect view of CentralMassNews.com and our connection to a group called Main Street Online. Charter also stated "the hyper-local websites run by Jack Schofield in Grafton are a franchise of Main Street Online, 'a national community news company.'" CentralMassNews.com is a network of six hyper-local news centers with three to six more planned to launch this year. The company was founded by Jack Schofield in March 2009.
First of all, Gareth Charter stating that my company is part of some other organization is 100 percent wrong and another attempt by him and his company to minimize our flourishing organization. I would think that a publisher in the field of news may actually check his facts before making a false statement like this.
CentralMassNews.com has no business or financial relationship with Main Street Online. Main Street Online did approach my company and courted us for several months. Due to the fact that we are successful, we have very high traffic to our online news centers and our audiences are growing incredibly - we are not interested in partnering with a national company.
They admired our model, our work and our rapid expansion. But we are not a franchise of any company, nor do we plan to be.
Readers may be interested to know that Gareth Charter and Kirk Davis, president of Gatehouse Media, also had discussions with me. Gareth Charter and Kirk Davis own the Holden Landmark Corp. together while Kirk Davis remains president at Gatehouse Media. This meeting took place on Sept. 23 at the Sheraton Hotel in Framingham. After learning more about the pair, I terminated all discussions.
As I did with Gareth Charter and Kirk Davis, I rejected all offers from Main Street Online. I do however have great respect for the very professional and elite group of advertising and editorial staff at Main Street Online. I continue to keep in touch with them as they progress towards beginning their network in New York and Connecticut. They have no operations in Rhode Island. This is more misinformation from Gareth Charter.
At CentralMassNews.com we are focused on bringing quality local news to our growing audiences, while holding true to our company's values with integrity and honesty.
