Leominster plastics maker to make eco-friendly cutlery for grocery chain

A Leominster plastics maker has been selected as the manufacturer of a collection of environmentally-friendly single use cutlery for the in-store cafes of a major U.S. organic grocery chain.

Waltham-based sustainable consumer products company Preserve selected UrthPact LLC of Leominster to manufacture the cutlery, which will be made from recycled plastic, and their dispensers. The products, made from 100 percent recycled polypropylene resin, will undergo a six-store soft launch through a pilot program this month and will be released nationwide in March, according to a Dec. 29 announcement from UrthPact. UrthPact said it can’t release the name of the grocery store until the cutlery is in stores.

Representatives from both Preserve and UrthPact said the companies are looking for more ways to partner this year, including on a new line of biodegradable and compostable plastic cutlery.
