A proposal to build a slots parlor off Route 117 in Leominster will be presented to the City Council at an informational meeting tonight by Baltimore-based Cordish Cos. and local construction management firm McCarty Cos.
The meeting will be at 6:15 p.m. at City Hall, prior to the regular City Council meeting. City Clerk Lynn Bouchard said representatives from the two companies will make a presentation for discussion, but city councilors will not hold a vote on plans.
The Leominster proposal follows Cordish proposals for slots parlors in Boxborough and Salisbury, both of which were voted down by selectmen. Cordish is vying for the state's sole slots parlor license, which is open for applications through Oct. 4.
Company officials at Cordish and Leominster-based McCarty were not available for comment Monday morning.
After bumping into a local project manager involved with the proposed project, Ward 2 City Councilor Wayne Nickel said he learned that Cordish and McCarty are eyeing a site near Walmart, close to the intersection of Route 117 and Interstate 190, for a potential slots parlor. Nickel said the site has two or three property owners.
Nickel said he believes the developers are trying to find out if there's an appetite for a slots parlor in Leominster, and are still considering sites in other communities. Ahead of today's meeting, Nickel said he was unsure whether the city would welcome a such an establishment, and he has not made up his own mind about it.
"The money is nice, but people live there 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so their concerns need to be listened to, at least," Nickel said.
In order to proceed, the City Council would have to vote to put the slots proposal on a ballot for a public vote.
