Kelly Cummings is a nurse, a trained health services administrator and now a vice president at FCHP. The new title represents a promotion from her previous assistant VP role with the insurer.
Vital Stats:
Age: 48
Residence: Wilbraham
Family: Husband, Brian
Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing from St. Joseph College in Connecticut; master's degree in health services administration from Sage Graduate School in New York
Previous job: Assistant vice president for care coordination here at FCHP
Start date at new job: May 11
Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. Actually, I've been in the same office at FCHP for about four years. With the concept of "new position needs new approach," I have changed it up a bit by moving various items around the office (this really means I added more Red Sox items!).
Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?
A. My own personal reaction! I had sought this position and when I was successful in my quest, I was surprised in how pleased yet humbled it made me feel. I do appreciate the opportunity to try and do more for our clients - members and employers mainly - in my new role.
Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. During these unique and challenging times in our economy, to be flexible, coordinated and resilient enough to be able to effectively juggle the growing number of competing needs, interests and responsibilities we all take on here at FCHP while striving to obtain a balance between my personal and professional self.
Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. The base or foundation of this new role came from my former assistant vice president position. So, using a "house building" analogy, I'd say it's a major addition to a previously existing house with upgrades!
Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. I had intended to focus on nursing in newborn and/or adult critical care - the people and systems used to help care for the most acutely ill of the "patient" population. Over time, that has morphed into a focus on the people and systems needed to provide more services, programs and care to a much larger population of "members." I tell folks that I went from caring for a patient load of five to a member population of more than 200,000!
Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. Excellent question! If you know places, please tell me! I tend to work through lunch while at my computer or in transit to meetings. While not a healthy thing to do (I don't recommend it to others), it is my reality most days.
Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. Other than to be healthy and be around those I value while still being responsible for myself, I really can't say. That's the fun of life!
