Katelyn Tivnan, anchor and reporter, WCTR Charter TV3

Tivnan

After a stint in Los Angeles working for Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, Worcester native Katelyn Tivnan has returned to her hometown as an anchor and reporter at WCTR Charter TV3's Worcester News Tonight. In this Q&A, she talks about returning home to New England weather and getting a job she's imagined herself in for years.

Age: 25
Residence: Holden
Family: My family consists of my parents, my younger sister Erin, and two Irish Setters-Murphy and Guinness
Education: Bachelor's degree from Boston University's College of Communication
Previous job: Working alongside an Emmy Award-winning host and correspondent for Entertainment Tonight & The Insider in Los Angeles
Start date at new job: Oct. 12

Q. How are you settling in at your new office?

A. I think I am settling in very well. The start of my new job coincided with my move back to Massachusetts from California, where I have been living since I graduated from college. It feels great to be back on the East Coast, especially in Worcester, which is where I grew up. I work with a great group of people who have made the transition into this job both easy and enjoyable.

Q. What's the biggest surprise you've had in starting the job?

A. Remembering how unpredictable New England weather can be! I was so excited to experience fall this year, and it snowed my first week of work! Not only was it great to see snow, but it also gave us a new lead story for that evening's newscast.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?
A. Time management plays a very large role in this position. The news is always changing, so it is important to not only focus on the task at hand, but to also have your ears and eyes open to what is going on in the community around you. You never know when news will break, and when it does you need to be one step ahead of it.

Q. How different is this job from your previous position?

A. I was fortunate enough to work with a very talented correspondent who became a mentor to me. The experiences I had working with her and the rest of the staff at Entertainment Tonight and The Insider were life changing. I learned many important lessons in every aspect of production, and now I am able to apply these experiences to my own work both behind and in front of the camera.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. It is strange to think about it, but this actually is exactly what I imagined I would be doing when I was in high school. I grew up telling people that when I was older, I wanted to be on the news. Now, here I am years down the road with the opportunity to begin a career doing just that.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. I usually pack my own lunch, but if I'm treating myself to a restaurant, it will be O'Connors. It is one of my favorites, and I have always loved their food!

Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. I try not to think about the future to that extent. Instead, I think it is more important to focus on the present and what I need to accomplish now. I have faith that if you work hard, dedicate yourself to your goals, and are a good person, then 10 years down the road you will be exactly where you are meant to be.
