Despite the country losing 125,000 jobs in June, the unemployment rate dropped from 9.7 to 9.5 percent last month, according to the according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The private sector gained 83,000 jobs in June, but that was outpaced by 225,000 workers who are no longer employed by the federal government to help complete the census. Overall, there are still 14.6 million Americans out of work.
Some industries continued to post job gains including the temporary employment sector, which grew by 21,000 jobs and the health care and manufacturing sectors, which each added 9,000 jobs. The leisure and hospitality industry gained 28,000 jobs. The construction industry lost about 22,000 jobs and has remained flat over a four-month period.
While private sector jobs have increased by about 593,000 since the beginning of the year, they are down by about 7.9 million from December 2007.
