Jobs created by new and expanding businesses in Massachusetts outweighed layoffs by downsizing and closing operations between April and June 2010, according to the New England Regional Office of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
A new report by the office shows that gross job gains hit 161,032 for the period, while gross job losses totaled 137,623. That added up to a net gain of 23,409 jobs, the largest quarterly increase since June 2007.
Nationally, the net change in jobs was 728,000 for the quarter. This was the first quarter since December 2007 that the national number has been in positive territory.
Of the Massachusetts jobs gained in the quarter, 132,069 came from expanding businesses, while 28,963 were from new businesses. Most of the job losses, 116,545, came from contracting businesses, while 21,078 came from companies shutting down.
