Industrial Jobs Down Statewide, Up In Central Massachusetts

Industrial employment dropped less than 1 percent in Massachusetts between August 2011 and August 2012, but increased 1.5 percent in Central Massachusetts, according to a report by Illinois-based Manufacturers' News.

The publication's annual Massachusetts Manufacturers Register found that 942 industrial jobs were lost in the Bay State, with declines in such industry sectors as printing and publishing, textiles, paper production, fabricated metals, and rubbers and plastics.

Massachusetts is home to 8,509 manufacturers, which employ 362,968 workers, according to the report.

Although productivity is up, employment declines are due to automation and technology, which reduce the need for employees, according to Tom Dubin, president of Manufacturers' News.

"Unfortunately the increase in productivity and output do not necessarily translate into employment gains," Dubin said.

Central Massachusetts has the highest level of industrial employment in Massachusetts, with 159,835 jobs. The expansion of Saint-Gobain into Devens was highlighted as a bright spot for the manufacturing industry, along with a handful of other expansions in other parts of the state.
