Hudson wins award for new master plan

The Town of Hudson announced it has received an award from the Massachusetts chapter of the American Planning Association for the master plan adopted by the Planning Board in November.

The Outstanding Planning Award recognizes a plan, program or process of “unusually high merit” from a municipality with a population of less than 50,000, according to a statement from the town. Plans were judged on five criteria: innovation, quality, transferability, implementation and comprehensiveness.

While a master plan is required to address such areas as planning goals and policies, land use, housing, economic development, Hudson’s plan expanded on the required topics by addressing energy planning, public health and social services, as well as the use of social media for citizen outreach, according to a statement from the town.

The master plan took about two-and-a-half years to develop, and was led by a 22-person steering committee, with several public forums and an open house with town departments that offered to make the process accessible to the community.

Hudson’s previous master plan dated back to 1964.

An award ceremony will take place Friday, Dec. 19, when town officials will be recognized.
