The U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development on Tuesday announced it has awarded $558,134 to four Central Mass. housing authorities to support the Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
The FSS program funding is intended to help public housing authorities hire service coordinators, who work to help connect residents with existing programs and services in their communities, according to HUD. Goals for the program include helping participants increase their income and reduce the need for rental and welfare assistance.
Participants in the program sign a five-year contract requiring heads of household to set goals with the aim of graduating and gaining access to an interest-bearing escrow account. Graduation requires the head of household to hold a job by the end of the five years, and prohibits family members from receiving cash welfare assistance in the 12-months prior to the end of program participation, according to HUD.
Recipients of additional HUD funding for the program include Acton, Framingham, Leominster and Worcester. Awards totaled:
