A new government report pointed to continued improvement in the housing market both in the Northeast and across the United States.
The U.S. departments of commerce and housing and urban development said building permits rose nationally in July by a seasonally adjusted 12.4 percent over July 2012 and 2.7 percent from June 2013. Also, housing starts, those in which builders have begun construction, soared 20.9 percent year over year and 5.9 percent from June.
Building permits and housing starts rose in the Northeast section of the country as well, the agencies said. The number of building permits rose 1 percent, to an estimated 106,000. That number is nearly 18 percent higher than in July 2012, outpacing national growth.
The growth in housing starts in the region was even higher. Starts rose 40.2 percent over June to a seasonally adjusted 115,000. That’s nearly 31 percent better than the number of starts reported in July 2012.
