Marlborough healthcare manufacturer Hologic will start a new educational program, after it surveyed women across the country on their knowledge of conditions affecting the uterus.
The results of the survey, conducted by Hologic in conjunction with The Harris Poll analytic group in New York City, showed less than half of women expressed confidence they could identify all major parts of the uterus, as well as a similar amount reporting a lack of knowledge of uterine fibroids, the tumors that can develop on the uterus and cause significant pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. According to Hologic, fibroids can affect up to 80% of women in their lifetime.
Hologic announced Friday it was launching a new educational campaign called Hey, U! meant to provide women with greater knowledge about treating fibroid-related conditions. It includes a series of animated short videos explaining the basics of uterine health, a patient symptom quiz, downloadable discussion guides, and information on various fibroid treatment solutions.
“As a global leader in women's health, we are committed to providing physicians and their patients with resources to help identify and treat the symptoms of uterine fibroids, which are a serious problem for a large majority of women,” Essex Mitchell, president of Hologic’s surgical division, said in a press release. “Our Hey, U! campaign is a great example of our commitment in action, and we're proud to launch it today, at the start of Fibroid Awareness Month."
Hologic produces several medical device products as Acessa and MyoSure to help treat uterine fibroids and provide an alternative option to procedures requiring hysterectomy.
