Two high-ranking state officials announced a new strategic planning initiative that will aim to prioritize needed infrastructure improvements across Central Massachusetts.
State secretary of Housing and Economic Development Gregory Bialecki, along with state transportation secretary Jeffrey Mullan, announced the creation of the 495/MetroWest Development Compact at the annual meeting of the 495/MetroWest Partnership, a regional advocacy organization.
Bialecki said over the next year the state will coordinate a series of meetings that will develop a list of infrastructure improvements needed for the region, which will then be prioritized by importance for the region as whole. The goal is to consider transportation, wastewater, water and other publicly funded projects that can be undertaken in the next two decades.
Bialecki said after the event he doesn't expect any new funding sources will be available for the projects, but he said creating such a prioritized list will help the state determine which projects in the region should be funded first using existing revenues.
The compact will be a collaboration between the Partnership, the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council and the MetroWest Growth Management Committee. It will encompass 32 towns along Interstate 495, ranging as far west as Worcester.
